Major John Jacob Myers' place of residence during the Revolution was in Lexington District, SC (Columbia). He was a Judge in South Carolina in Colonial times & after the Revolutionary War was a Judge of County Court and County Commissioner. He was a Whig. He entered the War as a Lieutenant and was promoted to the rank of Major. He served alternately under Gen. Thomas Sumter and Gen. Francis Marion. He was with Sumpter at Fishing Creek when he was surprised and his command so badly used up and scattered by Banastre Tarleton. He was also at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, Va. His home was burned by the Tories & his plantation pillaged. He was buried with military honors as an old Continental soldier in Lexington County, SC - from "Builders of Freedom and Their Descendants", by Isabel C. Patterson; the Walton Printing Co., Augusta, Ga., 1953; pages 149-150. National Society, DAR #'s 48909 & 53497.
General Francis Marion made his home his headquarters, so later the home was called "Ft. Marion", located 12 miles below Columbia, SC. (Ruth Cooper)
Died in Lexington District, SC.

Was a major in the Revolution. Served with Marion and Sumter. Was at the surrender of Cornwallis in Yorktown. Educated at Heidelberg. Moved with his father Rudolph from Switzerlan, Pennylvania, and then to South Carolina in 1731. Father Rudolph established the Fort Marion Plantaion in the Hopkins section.
Jacob had one other son who died at age 25, buried in the family graveyard in Richland County, SC

In a letter dated Feb. 20, 1961, to Ruth Cooper from Edwards Petterson:.."I remember hearing it said - that Uncle Joe Allen - said his Mother-in-law was a queen set down in the wrong place. She had silver goblets made for her and had engraved on them 'Phalby Myers born Sept. 24, 1784'. I don't know how the goblets got into her family - My father had two - and one was mine and one was Be Bee's. Be Bee left all she had to an adopted sister, so I guess Mary has it."

Franklin Myers was the 8th child of Dr. John Jacob Myers, II & wife, Sarah. He lived at Hopkins, SC (about 16 miles from Columbia). He was educated as a medical doctor and during the Civil War his detail was the refugee camps of Louisiana where he saw so much suffering that after the war, he never resumed his medical practice. His [1] wife had died during the Civil War so after the War, he came to Texas with the T. P. Railroad as a train Conductor.
Another of Ruth Cooper's notes: "...born 6-4-1838 at 'Solitude' Plantation, Hopkins, Richland County, SC...post office was Hopkins...also lived in Orangeburg..."
Isabel Patterson's letter to Aunt Elma said that he was the 7th child.
Mama Gunn, in a letter to Aunt Elma, said that he was born in Orangeburg, SC.

Ruth began working on our family genealogy before Grandma Sonoma died, & was often frustrated that more of the family would not get interested in their family history. She was a member of the DAR & the DRT. She was a help to many people & met many thru letters that she probably never met in person. She worked hard getting the correct history of Dallas told...but she was not always listened to. Particularly regarding the naming of Dallas. She never did get that story changed, but she did put questions in others minds. She touched a lot of lives with her work & her work will live on...[LSW]

Sissy tells the story that Aunt Elma's name was "Elmer" and that when she started to school, she was teased by the children for having a boys name. Mama Gunn said that she sould be proud, as she was named for a good friend of her father's, but Daddy Gunn had said that she was to go to school the next day and say that her name was "Elma". Mother remembered a similar story. Her name was not legally changed. Her sons didn't even know until she died & I guess her will had her real name. [LSW]

REVEREND BENJAMIN J. WARRENBURG, age 78, died Friday, May 16, 2008 after an extended illness. Pastor Warrenburg, affectionately known as “Pastor Ben”, was born October 1, 1929, in Dwight, Kansas to Benjamin L. Warrenburg and Dorothy M. Madsen. The family later moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1947. Pastor Ben served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska 1950-1953. He attended college and seminary in Fremont, Nebraska, graduating seminary in 1961. Following his ordination he served at First Lutheran in Potter, Neb. 1961-1965; Immanuel Lutheran in Omaha, Neb. 1965-66; Frienden Lutheran in Lincoln, Neb. 1966-69; Trinity Lutheran, Tipton, IA 1969-71; Redeemer Lutheran, Greenville, TX 1971-73; Grace Lutheran, Harlingen 1973-1988; and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Norse, Clifton, TX 1988-1999. Following his retirement in 1999, he continued to serve until July, 2000, until a new pastor (Pastor Beverly Blackman-Mounce) was installed.
Pastor Ben was active in the Harlingen Ministerial Alliance for 15 years and the Clifton Ministerial Alliance for 12 years. He served 9 years on the Harlingen Independent School Board, serving as President twice and 3 years on the Clifton Independent School Board, serving as President once.
Pastor Ben loved fishing, walking or jogging, working in the yard, and reading. He loved his pets and enjoyed playing with them. He was a quiet, gentle loving husband and father; an outstanding listener. First in his life was God, followed by family, friends and country. No matter how hectic his schedule was, he was never too busy to help someone with a problem. His eyes would sparkle when the children gathered each Sunday morning for the Children’s sermon. Also, he enjoyed sliding in an “Ole and Lena” joke into his sermons from time-to-time.

In World War II, Edwin served as Sergeant in the 16th Signal Operations Battallion furnishing communications for the 6th Army Headquarters, in the South Pacific campaign. He was chosen to take a portable generator to Baguio, summer capital of the Phillipines, to furnish electricity for the signing of the surrender of General Yamashita. The surrender took place in the mansion of former president Hoover's son-in-law. They worked all night hanging temporary lighting in the manion so there would be plenty of light for the news reel camera men. During the ceremonies Eugene Henslee stood only a few feet from the end of the long table and changed lens on one of the news reel cameras while General Yamashita and other high ranking Japanese officers signed the surrender of all Japanese in the Phillipines to American General "Slim" Wainwright. General Wainwright had just been released from a Japanese prison camp only hours before the surrender. General Yamashita was triend and handed in Manila about six months after the surrender. Since being discharged from service, Eugene has been associated with the electric power industry. He is at present (1963) with the Oklahoma Gas & Electric Company as Relay and Control Foreman, Eastern Division, Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Robert served as an Air Force pilot in World War II. After his termination, he enlisted with the Air National Guard in Tulsa, Ok. It was the 125th Fighter Squadron & was re-activated in 1951 & was sent to Korea. Robert's plane was shot down over Korea on December 6, 1951. He was listed as "missing-in-action" with no chance of survival. No work came through until May 1953 when information was sent out that he was alive and a prisoner of war. He was released in August 1953. Maj. H. R. Carman & his family have recently returned after 4 years service in Japan. He is now based at McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento, California.
